What is Music Therapy?


The Canadian Association for Music Therapy (CAMT) defines music therapy as the skillful use of music and musical elements by an accredited music therapist to promote, maintain, and restore mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health. 


Music has nonverbal, creative, structural, and emotional qualities. These are used in the therapeutic relationship to facilitate contact, interaction, self-awareness, learning, self-expression, communication, and personal development



What is a Certified Music Therapist (MTA)? 


A Certified Music Therapist (MTA) has:


  • Completed a university degree in music therapy from a recognized CAMT educational institution 
  • They are a member in good standing of CAMT 
  • They have completed a 1000-hour clinical internship under the supervision of a CAMT Approved MTA Supervisor
  • They have passed the Certification Board for Music Therapists exam administered in the USA
  • They have signed a Statement of Adherence to the CAMT Code of Ethics and standards of Practice.
